Content 2.0 - How I Hit the Mother-Lode!

I started my site in 2004 with a simple goal - to publish photos of curly hair styles. I had zero knowledge of hair styles, and no idea where I would find pictures of them. It was slow work. I did everything myself - tracking down, editing and uploading all the photos, and writing all the text to accompany them.

As soon a Content 2.0 was released I used it to invite visitors to upload their own curly hair photos and write about their experiences with curly hair.

Pictures and stories began pouring in.

It was like I'd been scrabbling around on the surface, looking for anything I could find that might be of value, and suddenly I'd tapped into a vein of pure gold. It started right where I stood and went on forever.

I'd hit the mother-lode.

Content 2.0 gave me a direct line to my visitors. They were telling me that for them, curly hair is not a theme or a topic - it's a state of being, a life story, a passion that runs really, really deep.

For my visitors, curly hair is about pride and frustration, admiration and ridicule, the pain of exclusion, the catastrophe of growing up looking different and struggling to fit in, of longing for straight hair and doing terrible things to get it. And ultimately, their stories are about self acceptance - about recognising, welcoming, and embracing their difference.

I wouldn't have known any of this about my visitors if I hadn't used Content 2.0. I would still be scrabbling blindly on the surface, hoping that what I published was of value to someone.

For that insight alone, for the knowledge it gives me about what my visitors think and feel, Content 2.0 has been the most valuable addition I've ever made to my site.

But Content 2.0 has very tangible site-building effects as well. Since that first invitation, my visitors have added 1200 pages to my site - their own photos, their own stories, their own requests for help and their own advice to each other.

The thing is, Content 2.0 is pretty much the only content I've added to my site in the last two years. I want to do more myself, and I will, but I've been busy building two more SBI sites and in the process have neglected my first.

Except for Content 2.0.

Content 2.0 keeps the site growing with almost no input from me. The site stays on-topic, it stays relevant, and it stays fresh.

My first task every day is to review, edit and publish the new Content 2.0 submissions that have come in. There's always something. Every submission I approve is a new page for the site, a new trigger for others to contribute, and a new insight into the mindset of my visitors.

It's a few minutes' work and the reward is - pure gold!
