Gardening Information on a Personal Scale

Having written 8 gardening books and run my own specialist plant nursery for 25 years, I have a unique perspective on what works or doesn't work in the gardening business. I confess I'm one of the SBI-ers who pushes the Content 2.0 module and the system into different configurations. So far, it has exceeded my expectations and here's why.

I run it for photo contests. My readers will flood the contest to the extent that this past year I had to divide the entries into 5 different sites. Frankly, given that Google image search is a big traffic generator in the gardening world (everybody wants to get landscaping ideas) this has really shot my site traffic up nicely and established many of my sites as "places to go" on the Net.

I use it to establish authority in that I've been answering beginner gardening questions using these forms. Some of those answers now lead the Google ranking for their keywords and some are even massive traffic draws to my sites. Readers get a benefit and so do I.

It's this interaction that makes C2 so powerful for me - allowing me to both create a new page as well as provide info to readers at the same time.

I used it to create a blogging system instead of using Wordpress. This worked nicely and while I've discontinued this for other reasons (my traffic dropped when I stopped and it's just recovering a year later) it worked nicely to both create content and allow readers to discuss and comment. Again, being able to interact with readers and give them access to information works for both of us.

I've used it to identify plants and insects on different parts of the sites. This kind of resource (readers upload pictures of their insects and unknown plants) and they get identified. In one case, I have an insect-expert doing the ID work and in the other, readers make their suggestions. In both cases, the interaction is high and a powerful way to get information to readers that is not easily found elsewhere.

The literally thousands of pages my readers have contributed in the way of questions or uploaded pictures allows me to have a level of interaction with many thousands of gardeners every month that I was not able to duplicate with other Net software.

Besides the benefit of traffic, it is now known in the landscape industry that I run one of the largest gardening site(s) on the Net. I'm one of the "authorities" on the gardening-Internet. This in turn leads to product reviews and other perks (like free garden tours to Europe)

Now. For the record, I'm not getting paid to do this and quite frankly, I hope none of my fellow garden writers see it. I like to think C2 is my unfair advantage I have when it comes to Internet publishing.

"Attitude" means they are positive, optimistic people who work well with others (this is why the SBI! Forums are unmatched in the small e-business world).

"Motivation" means they want to build a business and take control of their lives enough to sacrifice some leisure activities.

We point this out because we do not want to falsely raise your expectations. SBI! does not deliver "automatic success." Nothing can.
